Work After Graduation

Is the international student eligible for work in Canada after graduation?

Yes. International students may work in Canada after graduation through the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. To qualify, you must complete a full-time program of at least eight months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate, while maintaining full-time student status during your studies.

Under the new IRCC regulations (effective November 1, 2024), students in non-degree programs such as college diplomas, advanced diplomas, or certificates must ensure their field of study is on IRCC’s approved list of eligible programs. Examples of PGWP-eligible diploma and advanced diploma programs include Pharmacy Technician, Medical Laboratory Technician, Practical Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Construction Engineering Technology, Software Engineering Technician, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Network Systems Technician, and Computer Programming.

Students enrolled in degree programs- such as Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral, or professional degrees (e.g., Medicine, Law, Pharmacy)- remain fully eligible for the PGWP regardless of field of study.

Key points to note about the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The length of the PGWP depends on your program duration:

  • Less than 8 months: Not eligible.
  • 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP valid for the same length as your study program.
  • 2 years or more: Eligible for a 3-year work permit.

The PGWP is an open work permit, allowing you to work for any employer in Canada. The experience gained can later support your application for permanent residency through pathways such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
